5 reasons to fit a shower filter

I was catching up on the latest natural living posts from around the web and this post 5 reasons to use a shower filter from Wellness Mama really struck a chord, we use a Brita filter for our drinking water and a filter in the kettle, we use fish water (out the tank) to water our plants and have thought about having a filter system fitted for the whole house but not really looked into it properly. This is a great post that makes me think we need to get one ASAP!

Thank you to Wellness Mama for this great post:

Most of us know the importance of drinking enough water and filtering it to avoid harmful chemicals or contaminants, but did you know that shower water can be just as harmful (if not more so) than drinking water?

Things to know before you spray perfume on your body

Have you walked behind someone and inhaled a massive stench of sickly perfume or been on the bus when some idiotic teen is spraying lynx all over themselves? It’s gross right, especially if you don’t wear it yourself, it catches the back of your throat, irritates your breathing and feels claustrophobic.

Well not only is it offensive to your nose, it’s also really bad for your body.

According to a new report released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), commissioned by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, seventeen name brand perfume products were found to contain a “complex cocktail of natural essences and synthetic chemicals – often petrochemicals,” including diethyl phthalate, a chemical linked to sperm damage in adult men and abnormal development of reproductive organs in baby boys. Lab results revealed an average of 14 chemicals secretly lurk in common fragrances; some of which have been linked to hormone disruption and allergic reactions while others have not even been assessed for safety in personal care products.

Chemicals from perfumes, cosmetics, and personal care products are absorbed through the skin and inhaled with applied or sprayed. This pollution begins in the womb: a 2009 EWG study found synthetic musk chemicals Galaxolide and Tonalide in the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants.

A to Z of natural living. Letter A.

Hey lovely people, I thought it would be a great idea to do an A to Z of natural living, including remedies, ailments, healthy tips and idea, alternative therapies etc, I think this could be fun and I want you to feel free to add your own in the comments.

Today I bring you the letter A (I feel like Count von Count from Sesame street!).

Ageing:
Aging affects us all from the time we hit adulthood until we die, but we have a choice over how we age. I think aging is beautiful and so are the lines on someones face that map their lives to the world, but sometimes its nice to slow down the process a little. There are many things you can do without going to drastic lengths like botox or plastic surgery. I mean who seriously wants botulinum toxin pumped into their face, the warning on the box says ” may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening”, the main reactions that have been reported are itching, rash, red itchy welts, breathing difficulties. – nice, that will improve your glowing skin!

How to heal eczema with essential oils

My boys suffered for a long time as little children with Eczema, especially around the backs of their knees and thighs, when we quit dairy there Eczema cleared up and hasn’t come back since, so I do believe a lot of skin complaints need healing from the inside out, start looking at what is going in your body and also what creams etc you are putting on your skin. I know the specialist eczema creams prescribed by doctors have an ingredient which actually causes the skin to dry out?! go figure that one. I use plain coconut oil on my skin and sometimes combine it with essential oils such as peppermint for a foot refreshing massage lotion.

Dangers of fake bake tanning

bikini

As the festive season is quickly approaching, Fake Bake mobile tanning units are popping up in my town and I guess in yours to. You can also buy the stuff online to tan yourself at home. Popular with celebrities, they have been deemed by the media and tanning salons as ‘a healthier way to tan’, they big them up by saying ‘Fake Bake uses botanical ingredients and advancements in their products have allowed them to remove ingredients such as parabens and artificial preservatives from their tanning products’. Ohh you think, they must be OK, in fact a local representative said

“Fake bake is suitable for anybody, young or old, is also safe to use if you are pregnant ( after 12 weeks) all skin tones, and can be used on many different skin conditions, with no irritation.”

Lets dig a little bit deeper, as I always advise you all to do with any product you are putting on your skin.

The benefts and many uses of coconut oil

We love coconut oil here at NWF, it really is the bomb!

We use it in cooking, on our skin, hair and oil pull with it too. Check out these handy posters for more uses and benefits. If you can buy organic coconut oil as its more pure.

coconut oil

How great and all from a coconut!

We also use coconut milk in curries, puddings and it is especially nice with porridge.

Its one of the best fats to cook with too as it doesn’t turn rancid when heated either.
