Low impact living in a town – what can be done?

We live in Blackpool which is a seaside resort in the Northwest of UK, population of roughly 142,000, so we are a large town. Contrary to popular belief from my photos, we live in a terrace house surrounded by neighbours and the normal trappings of large town life. So until we get our dream home in the countryside what do we do to have a lesser impact on the environment and to live a ‘back to nature’ way of life. A simple guide to our low impact living.

What’s so harmful with DIY?

So it’s Sunday, a typical day to get the decorating done, trip to the local DIY store for all the gear and home to crack on, you fall into one of two camps, people like me who wake up one day and think “ohh that wall would look nice red” move whatever furniture is near that wall to the middle of the room, or in some cases if its a big bookcase don’t bother moving it at all, grab the paint and go for it or those who prepare everything, move the furniture out the room, dust, wash and strip the walls, sand them down etc. Whichever way you do it is up to you but I have a few thoughts for you before you grab that tin of paint.

Whilst going on this journey of ours learning about living without toxins, we decided to decorate our living room, we had laminate flooring down which we got years before for a discount and it wasn’t fitted properly, the radiator had leaked on it and it was starting to lift in some places, the walls had been papered and over painted so many times and the woodwork was chipped and pretty knackered, we got rid of the second hand leather sofa we had, mainly because it was so cold to sit on (we didn’t know about the animal implications then) so we decided to gut the whole room and do a proper job.
