Sexy raw cacao, get it in your mouth!

When starting on this life changing journey of changing what you eat and finding out more about what is good for you, you will come across some weird sounding foods that those ‘in the know’ go on about, it’s not nice being left out of the secret superfood circle so here is a basic guide:

Raw Cacao (pronounced Ka-cow)

It is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter), you can get it in various forms, nibs ( like little chocolate chips), beans, powder and in blocks. It is the purest form of chocolate you can get.

Archaeological evidence in Costa Rica indicates that cacao was drunk by Maya traders as early as 400 BC. The Mayans and Aztecs thought that cacao beans were so valuable, they used them as money.

So you are aware most cocoa powder and commercial chocolate is processed via the “Dutch method” meaning it is subjected to scorching temperatures of up to 150°C with the additional aid of solvents, thus destroying most of the nutrients and antioxidants. Be sure to buy certified organic raw cacao in a powder, nib or whole bean form as the temperature will have never been allowed to exceed 40°C  so it keeps all the heat-sensitive vitamins, minerals and antioxidants intact.

Raw cacao beans contain possibly the world’s most concentrated source of antioxidants found in any food. They also extremely high in magnesium which has been found to be the most common deficient major mineral even following a balanced diet. This is probably the primary reason women crave chocolate during their period. Magnesium is associated with balanced brain chemistry, strong bones, and happiness.

If that wasn’t enough, raw cacao beans contains 21% of the recommended daily allowance of iron, plus raw cacao beans have an antioxidant (ORAC) score of 95,500. To put that into perspective, that is 14 times more flavonoids (antioxidants) than red wine and 21 times more than green tea.

It is quite bitter and rich compared to chocolate and it can make you feel a bit silly and horny depending on how much you eat and your metabolism.
