Fight colds and flu naturally

Before getting to the natural remedies for colds and flu, I want to explain to you how medicine works, let’s say for example you feel full of cold and have a sore throat, runny eyes, mucus etc.
You go and buy a packet of Lemsip to make you feel better.

The packet says:
“For fever, headaches, body aches, blocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough”
Contains Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Paracetamol, Guaifenesin:

Let’s look at those ingredients:
The primary side effect of phenylephrine is hypertension (high blood pressure) and it can cause increased heart rate
Some patients have been shown to have an upset stomach, severe abdominal cramping, and vomiting issues connected to taking this drug
Side-effects of guaifenesin include nausea, vomiting, formation of kidney stones, diarrhoea, dry mouth, chapped lips and constipation
Paracetamol can cause your stomach to bleed if you take it regularly, liver and kidney damage too.

And you take this to help your cold, but what happens is this, this medicine suppresses your immune system and your body can’t naturally fight off the germs of the cold, the suppression pushes the infection down deeper into your body and then in a couple of weeks or months the cold comes back but much worse, again you take medicine and the cycle continues, but not only do you have a cold now but you have a deeper infection, possibly have other side effects too from the medicines in the lemsip and you end up much worse than in the beginning.

Any illness you have is cause by dis-ease in the body, you body isn’t in balance, you are susceptible to picking up illnesses from others if your immune system is weak.

You need to figure out what the dis-ease has been caused by (notice I didn’t write it as disease, I want to make you aware that it is just imbalance). When you change what you eat and limit your toxin intake and environment you boost your body and immune system and if you use natural remedies like foods, herbs, essential oils etc to heal yourself when you catch a cold or have imbalance you don’t cause added extra illnesses.

Echinacea
Echinacea is a household name when it comes to warding off colds and flu. This herb is used as a natural antibiotic and immune system stimulator, helping to build up resistance. The reason for its effectiveness is because of its ability to stimulate the lymph flow in the body. Lymph runs parallel with our bloodstream and carries toxins out of the body. The herb can be taken in liquid or capsule form for 2-3 week periods during “high risk” flu seasons. The tea from this herb has also grown in popularity for treating infections and cancers including skin cancer. I recommend the tincture form as some of the tablets are mixed with chalk and fillers.

When I feel a cold coming on I reach for the Echinacea tincture straight away, I have 15 drops in water 3 times a day for about 3 days, if it feels like flu I take it for longer and combine it with other great remedies like honey and lemon in hot water, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric in hot milk (rice or almond is nice).

Hot baths with Epsom salts, lavender and eucalyptus oils in them and plenty of rest.
You need to rest so your body can heal itself. If you feel like you need to sleep, then sleep, if you feel like eating soup, eat soup, listen to your body and really go with what it is telling you it needs when you are ill.

This is the same for all medicines and illnesses, there is always a natural way to ‘cure’ yourself. Do some research into it; you might be surprised what you find.

Since quitting dairy I haven’t had an asthma attack or needed to take my inhaler and I have had serious asthma since the age of 7! My boys no longer suffer from eczema either. Just changing that one things changed our lives.

Nature’s flu shot
3 cups pineapple juice
Juice 6 lemons
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 bulb garlic
2 tbsp honey
2 tsp ginger
Blend all together and store in a glass jar. Take 1 cup 4 times a day until symptoms subside.

According to Louise Hay you get a cold when you have too much going on at once, mental confusion and disorder and small hurts. So she suggests you say the affirmation “I allow my mind to relax and be at peace, clarity and harmony are within me and around me. All is well.”

If you are pregnant or breast feeding remember to check which essential oils are ok for you to use, and if you have auto immune disease please check with your practitioner before taking echinacea.
