Detox and cleansing juicing recipes

Detoxing allows your body to rid itself of toxins that have accumulated in many forms, preservatives, colours, additives, heavy metals and chemicals we have been exposed to at home, work or outdoors. Also allergens in food and the environment, medicinal drugs and body products all add to the amount of toxins in our bodies, no wonder sometimes our systems can’t cope if we are run down, our poor bodies have to fight infection or illness on top of filtering out the junk and toxic overload.

A detox may last 6-12 weeks or you can do a quick cleanse for 3+ days, your body will thank you for the benefits no matter how long you do it for.

As well as juicing, you may want to omit gluten containing grains, dairy, meat (if you eat it), caffine, sugar, alchohol and eat plenty of light foods including brassica family veg including broccoli, cabbage, spinach, sprouts etc, these assist with detox.

You can of course omit food all together and do a juice fast

When starting a detox it is not unusual to experience headaches, as this is simply the body’s reaction to getting rid of all the toxins. Also, it maybe slight withdrawal if you are a regular drinker of caffeine and also if you were adding sugar to your morning cereal or cup of tea. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep and the headaches should subside after a few days when you are fully detoxed.

I would suggest cutting out one thing at a time really or you may feel really crappy and give up before the day is over!

Some herbal teas increase liver function, dandelion tea is especially good for this, psyllium husks mixed into drinks also help absorb toxins and assist in their elimination.

RECIPES:

Apple, pear and beet juice

Beetroot increases liver activity.

Makes 1 1/4 cups 10fl oz

1 medium apple

1 medium pear

1/2 large beetroot

2 tsp psyllium husks

Juice the pear, apple and beetroot, whisk in the psyllium husks and drink immediately.

Clean green juice

Bright green drink that contains chlorophyll, an excellent body cleanser, plus nutrients folate, carotene and potassium all essential for good health

Makes 1 cup 8fl oz

5 small spinach leaves

1 medium green bell pepper

1 celery stalk with leaves

2 large lettuce leaves

Process everything in the juicer and enjoy

Apple, spinach and onion juice

People working with heavy metals, mercury or lead would benefit from this brew. Onions and garlic contain high amounts of sulphur compounds which help combat heavy metal build up.

Makes 1/4 cup 6fl oz

2 small apples

1/4 small red onion

2oz spinach leaves

1 clove garlic

1 1/2 tsp psyllium husks

Juice the apples, onion, garlic and spinach then whisk in the psyllium husks, drink straight away.
