Gut healing the vegan way

Gut healing the vegan way

We have bought a book about healing your gut  and it is really great but the thing it doesn’t tackle is, what if you are vegan?

Most of the time you read about bone broth being healing for the gut because of collagen, and I will be honest here, my partner has so much pain in his stomach at the moment we even considered for like 2 minutes actually using bone broth to fix him and then go back to being veggie, but then I thought I would look into it further to see what the alternatives are, because through this journey from meat eaters to veggie lovers, there is always an alternative, with a bit of imagination and some research you never miss out.

So this gut healing vegetable broth from Wallflower Kitchen is fantastic!

Pop over to her site for the full recipe and loads of information about gut healing and why she feels bone broth isn’t really that great

You must try cacao, its the new healthy high!

Have you tried cacao yet? it is amazing and the new healthy trend that is taking the UK by storm.

Raw Cacao (pronounced Ka-cow)

It is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter), you can get it in various forms, nibs ( like little chocolate chips), beans, powder and in blocks. It is the purest form of chocolate you can get.

What better than pampering yourself with a hot chocolate made with Sicilian orange oil, cacao, almond milk and maple syrup.

It’s blumming delicious!

Or make yourself some bliss balls.

Detox and cleansing juicing recipes

smoothi

Detoxing allows your body to rid itself of toxins that have accumulated in many forms, preservatives, colours, additives, heavy metals and chemicals we have been exposed to at home, work or outdoors. Also allergens in food and the environment, medicinal drugs and body products all add to the amount of toxins in our bodies, no wonder sometimes our systems can’t cope if we are run down, our poor bodies have to fight infection or illness on top of filtering out the junk and toxic overload.

A detox may last 6-12 weeks or you can do a quick cleanse for 3+ days, your body will thank you for the benefits no matter how long you do it for.

What to make with juice pulp

After making my juice this morning, (ginger, lemon, carrot and apple) I looked at all the pulp and thought it a shame it was going into the compost again, I have fed other green pulp to the chickens before but it was a bit zingy, anyhow I popped onto my bestie google and asked the question “what to make with juice pulp”?

A very good website appeared called Vegetarian times and I found this really helpful article:

One of the questions I get asked most about juicing is “What can I do with the juice pulp?” Tons of things! Read on for 20 of my favorite uses for leftover juice pulp—and get inspired to reduce your food waste and make fantastic use of healthful fiber.

1. Blend pulp into a smoothie to add fiber.
2. Add to a soup to thicken and boost fiber and nutrient density.
3. Use fruit pulp to make frozen “pulpsicles” or fruit pulp ice.
4. Make a veggie broth by boiling pulp with water, herbs, and spices, then straining.
5. Make a “fruit tea” by boiling fruit pulp with water, adding spices such as cinnamon or ginger, cooling, and then straining.
6. Use veggie pulp to add nutrient density to mac n’ cheese or pasta sauce, or layer into a lasagne.
7. Make fabulous fruit leathers.
9. Use in homemade veggie burgers or fritters. Pulp adds moisture, flavor, and nutrition.
10. Mix pulp into baked goods like muffins, cakes, bread,  dehydrated or baked cookies, and granola bars. Celery, onion, carrot, sweet potato, spinach, apple, and berry all work beautifully.
11. Use fruit or veggie pulp to add flavor, texture, and moisture to pancakes.
12. Make dehydrated pulp crackers.
13. Use pulp for raw pizza crust.
14. Make pulp marmalade.
15. Make a pulp crumble by mixing pulp with fruit and juice, reducing, and then topping with oats, spices, nuts, or seeds.
16. Dehydrate and make trail mix with raw nuts, seeds, and dried fruits.
17. Dehydrate and use like bread crumbs.
18. Use in DIY skincare recipes like scrubs, masks, and soap.
19. Mix pulp into your dog’s food or make dog treats.
If all else fails:
20. Feed it to your chickens, freeze it in ice cube trays to use later, or compost it

I ended up adding it to a pan with water, cloves, cardamon, cinnamon, rosemary, thyme, honey and blackberries and turing it into a winter tonic. Thanks for the inspiration Vegetarian Times! Pop over to thier site for more suggestions by readers.

Happy Juicing (P.S. if anyone invents a self cleaning juicer, let me know! )

Fight colds and flu naturally

Before getting to the natural remedies for colds and flu, I want to explain to you how medicine works, let’s say for example you feel full of cold and have a sore throat, runny eyes, mucus etc.
You go and buy a packet of Lemsip to make you feel better.

The packet says:
“For fever, headaches, body aches, blocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough”
Contains Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Paracetamol, Guaifenesin:

Let’s look at those ingredients:
The primary side effect of phenylephrine is hypertension (high blood pressure) and it can cause increased heart rate
Some patients have been shown to have an upset stomach, severe abdominal cramping, and vomiting issues connected to taking this drug
Side-effects of guaifenesin include nausea, vomiting, formation of kidney stones, diarrhoea, dry mouth, chapped lips and constipation
Paracetamol can cause your stomach to bleed if you take it regularly, liver and kidney damage too.

Banana, frozen raspberry, carrot and apple smoothie

smoothie2

Perfect for when you need something sweet but have no cake or are trying to be a good girl or boy 😉

This tastes like a fruity carrot cake in a glass, so much more healthier too. We love smoothies!

2 carrots and 2 apples juiced

2 bananas

1/4 bag frozen raspberries – these are best frozen to give the cold taste plus you don’t need ice cubes!

Pop everything in the blender with half teaspoon of ginger or juice a piece of fresh ginger with the carrot and apple, whizz it up and serve.

So yummy and good for you.
