Spring is in the air with lemon balm

Spring is in the air with lemon balm,

The past few days the sun has been shining here in Blackpool UK and little sprouts are peeking through the ground, I have been planting seeds for a couple of weeks now and the aubergine, sweet pea and tomato seedlings have appeared. I always get really excited by this happening.

Today I planted sunflower, marigold and Calendula seeds, I re-use takeaway tubs with lids because they make great little propagators.

Last year I dried a lot of lemon balm as it grew in abundance and I will be honest with you, I havent used it yet, but I am drawn to it today and feel it has womanly properties so I got out my herbal books and did some research.

Things to know before you spray perfume on your body

Have you walked behind someone and inhaled a massive stench of sickly perfume or been on the bus when some idiotic teen is spraying lynx all over themselves? It’s gross right, especially if you don’t wear it yourself, it catches the back of your throat, irritates your breathing and feels claustrophobic.

Well not only is it offensive to your nose, it’s also really bad for your body.

According to a new report released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), commissioned by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, seventeen name brand perfume products were found to contain a “complex cocktail of natural essences and synthetic chemicals – often petrochemicals,” including diethyl phthalate, a chemical linked to sperm damage in adult men and abnormal development of reproductive organs in baby boys. Lab results revealed an average of 14 chemicals secretly lurk in common fragrances; some of which have been linked to hormone disruption and allergic reactions while others have not even been assessed for safety in personal care products.

Chemicals from perfumes, cosmetics, and personal care products are absorbed through the skin and inhaled with applied or sprayed. This pollution begins in the womb: a 2009 EWG study found synthetic musk chemicals Galaxolide and Tonalide in the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants.

Backache:

Backache affects so many people now, from sitting in offices most of the day to car journeys, sitting down a lot can increase the lack of moveable muscles in the back and the core is not properly supported. Not being aligned properly, having one leg shorter than the other, throwing you out of balance or an injury can cause back ache too. Sometimes stress and inflammation can make the problem worse. Ageing:
Aging affects us all from the time we hit adulthood until we die, but we have a choice over how we age. I think aging is beautiful and so are the lines on someones face that map their lives to the world, but sometimes its nice to slow down the process a little. There are many things you can do without going to drastic lengths like botox or plastic surgery. I mean who seriously wants botulinum toxin pumped into their face, the warning on the box says ” may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening”, the main reactions that have been reported are itching, rash, red itchy welts, breathing difficulties. – nice, that will improve your glowing skin!

Natural allergy remedies

As a life long hayfever sufferer and former asthmatic ( Since quitting dairy I haven’t had an asthma attack or used an inhaler) I know just how bothersome allergies can be, my natural cures now are taking a spoonful of local honey through the summer months to ease roblems, I also put a barrier cream such as coconut oil on my nostrils if I am going to the allotment or countryside, I also juice a lot and try and keep my immune system good.

I discovered this great article about more natural ways to cure allergies on Mother Earth news:
Allergies plague millions of people, and many only get marginal relief from drugs, which can also have frustrating side effects. Natural allergy remedies, however, often have fewer side effects, and can combat allergic reactions to plants such as the notorious ragweed, shown here.

How to heal eczema with essential oils

My boys suffered for a long time as little children with Eczema, especially around the backs of their knees and thighs, when we quit dairy there Eczema cleared up and hasn’t come back since, so I do believe a lot of skin complaints need healing from the inside out, start looking at what is going in your body and also what creams etc you are putting on your skin. I know the specialist eczema creams prescribed by doctors have an ingredient which actually causes the skin to dry out?! go figure that one. I use plain coconut oil on my skin and sometimes combine it with essential oils such as peppermint for a foot refreshing massage lotion.

Low impact living in a town – what can be done?

We live in Blackpool which is a seaside resort in the Northwest of UK, population of roughly 142,000, so we are a large town. Contrary to popular belief from my photos, we live in a terrace house surrounded by neighbours and the normal trappings of large town life. So until we get our dream home in the countryside what do we do to have a lesser impact on the environment and to live a ‘back to nature’ way of life. A simple guide to our low impact living.
