Nation’s love for tea dwindles

Its National Tea Day tomorrow on the 21st April, so tea lovers across the UK will be raising a mug to celebrate the nation’s favourite beverage.

According to financial planner, Tilney, we spend a hefty £1,475 on tea in a lifetime – that’s more than we spend on other household staples including pasta (£1,387), cooking oils (£954) and jam (£1,015).

We have bought a book about healing your gut  and it is really great but the thing it doesn’t tackle is, what if you are vegan?

Most of the time you read about bone broth being healing for the gut because of collagen, and I will be honest here, my partner has so much pain in his stomach at the moment we even considered for like 2 minutes actually using bone broth to fix him and then go back to being veggie, but then I thought I would look into it further to see what the alternatives are, because through this journey from meat eaters to veggie lovers, there is always an alternative, with a bit of imagination and some research you never miss out.

A day on the farm, willow weaving and lambs!

I spent the day at my friends farm in Dolphinholme and we played with willow, willow is amazing for building structures, we used Osier willow to make lanterns and I made an oblix for my ivy to grow up.

There is a local custom in Chediston, Suffolk, known as a ‘willow stripping’ ceremony. This is usually held at the first full moon in May. A Green George figure is dressed in willow strippings, dances around and is then ceremoniously thrown into the local pond.

Osier withies (strong, flexible willow stems) are traditionally used for basket-making and weaving, and are becoming increasingly popular for use as willow screens and sculptures.

Osier, like all willows, is also grown for its ability to absorb heavy metals, and is often planted to ‘clean up’ contaminated waste ground. (thank you Woodland Trust for this info)

Have you tried cacao yet? it is amazing and the new healthy trend that is taking the UK by storm.

Energy boosting Raspberry & cacao smoothie

When you get that afternoon slump instead of grabbing a bar of chocolate blend up an energy boosting smoothie, if you go out to work, make it in the morning and take it with you just make sure you keep it chilled at work. Simple to make and tastes like velvet, you will get a buzz from the cacao and baobab which will last a lot longer than a bar of chocolate.

Easy dairy and meat free lasagne recipe

Easy dairy free and meat free lasagne recipe, serves 6.

You will need:

Packet of lasagne sheets (these can be gluten free if you wish)

Tin chopped tomatoes

Bag of quorn mince (or vegan option could be green lentils)

2 large cloves of garlic

1 onion

Salt, pepper, chilli flakes, paprika, mixed dried herbs such as oregano, thyme, sage, marjoram etc (fresh works great too)

Coconut oil

1 Aubergine

Potatoes

Wild garlic oil ( any flavoured oil would work, even plain olive oil)

Flour, dairy free marg, nutmeg (optional), non dairy milk, kale, garlic clove, coconut oil for the topping and side serving.

Cheap meat usually comes at a price – one paid by the farm animals and often the environment too, you can make a difference by choosing wisely before you spend your money. “Approximately 900 million chickens are reared for meat in the UK each year and a staggering 86 million are wasted” – Dr Tracey Jones, Compassion’s Director of Food Business

When chickens are kept in cages, it is brutal and so far away from their natural behaviour, imagine living your whole life squashed in an A4 (size of printer paper) size cage, having your feathers plucked out by your neighbours because they are so bored, having your beak chopped off to stop you pecking, standing on wire mesh which hurts your feet and breathing in 30,000 other chickens poo, dust and urine. Not nice at all.

Not only are the conditions bad for hens, it’s even worse if you are born a male chick.

The vegetarian society says “All egg production systems involve the disposal of unwanted male chicks because they cannot be used in the industry. Male chicks from selectively bred egg-laying strains are not suitable for meat production and so are killed at 1-3 days old. It is estimated that around 30 million male chicks are destroyed annually by a number of permitted methods. These include the use of mechanical apparatus producing immediate death (such as a homogeniser which minces up chicks alive), exposure to gas mixtures, dislocation of the neck, decapitation, neck-breaking or suffocation. A limited number of the dead chicks are used as low-priced animal feed-stuff for zoos and wildlife parks, with the remainder usually going to landfill”

All EU eggs have to be labelled for identification, although local farms where you can go and have a look at the conditions the chickens live in would be proffered, especially when you read case like this one about an RSPCA freedom food farm
