How to give your body a spring clean detox.

Are you connected to your food?

Ask yourself the question “How connected am I to the food I eat”?

I have found just chatting to people, not many are actually invested or connected to the food they eat, eating is a massive part of our lives, in the western world where there is an abundance of food, it is almost taken for granted that there will be food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That if you have the money you can walk into a shop or supermarket and have your pick of any food you desire, and that is where the connection has been lost, food from all over the world is sold, hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles from coming out of the ground to reaching your plate.

Fight colds and flu naturally

Before getting to the natural remedies for colds and flu, I want to explain to you how medicine works, let’s say for example you feel full of cold and have a sore throat, runny eyes, mucus etc.
You go and buy a packet of Lemsip to make you feel better.

The packet says:
“For fever, headaches, body aches, blocked nose, sore throat and chesty cough”
Contains Phenylephrine Hydrochloride, Paracetamol, Guaifenesin:

Let’s look at those ingredients:
The primary side effect of phenylephrine is hypertension (high blood pressure) and it can cause increased heart rate

Sexy raw cacao, get it in your mouth!

When starting on this life changing journey of changing what you eat and finding out more about what is good for you, you will come across some weird sounding foods that those ‘in the know’ go on about, it’s not nice being left out of the secret superfood circle so here is a basic guide:

Raw Cacao (pronounced Ka-cow)

It is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter), you can get it in various forms, nibs ( like little chocolate chips), beans, powder and in blocks. It is the purest form of chocolate you can get.

What’s so harmful with DIY?

So it’s Sunday, a typical day to get the decorating done, trip to the local DIY store for all the gear and home to crack on, you fall into one of two camps, people like me who wake up one day and think “ohh that wall would look nice red” move whatever furniture is near that wall to the middle of the room, or in some cases if its a big bookcase don’t bother moving it at all, grab the paint and go for it or those who prepare everything, move the furniture out the room, dust, wash and strip the walls, sand them down etc. Whichever way you do it is up to you but I have a few thoughts for you before you grab that tin of paint.

Whilst going on this journey of ours learning about living without toxins, we decided to decorate our living room, we had laminate flooring down which we got years before for a discount and it wasn’t fitted properly, the radiator had leaked on it and it was starting to lift in some places, the walls had been papered and over painted so many times and the woodwork was chipped and pretty knackered, we got rid of the second hand leather sofa we had, mainly because it was so cold to sit on (we didn’t know about the animal implications then) so we decided to gut the whole room and do a proper job.

Benefits of coconut oil

1901302_10152055606298049_2101971449_n

We love coconut oil, its a must in our house, I use it as an all over body moisturiser and to heal chapped lips, great in cooking (with potatoes, rosemary and garlic, roasted in the oven-yummy!) good for babies bottoms instead of toxic nappy rash cream. Awesome on untreated wooden furniture as an alternative to furniture polish.

January detox honesty special

Day 1 of bettering my health. (detox starts here)

We are ovo-vegetarians, no meat/fish, we eat our chickens eggs and honey from the allotment. No dairy, ( although when we stayed in a hotel we ate croissants for breakfast, so yummy but so wrong)

We used to be no gluten too but that slipped, (we love pastry and bread too much, sometimes make our own gluten free bread but this depends on being organised and having enough eggs and making puffed pastry from gluten free flour is almost impossible)

We have no toxic chemicals in our house or in our body/bath products ( we are really strict about this and have travelled miles for a decent bar of soap) we have come a long way in 5 years, stopping smoking, no drinking alcohol, no caffeine but we have gone no further. We have talked about how tried we feel and how Tom has aches and is cold a lot of the time, I have a bad lower back and hold onto weight around my middle. We realised we need to move up to the next level of health and wellbeing or its going to be a slippery slope of danish pastries and slobbing in front of the TV.

How to get started and change your life

10519771_693045977433244_6420939035561254885_n

I will explain how it all started a few years ago. My eldest son James was diagnosed with some kind of autism, ADD and dyspraxia. The doctor was rather vague about this diagnosis and to be honest not very helpful but she was quick to prescribe a ‘cure’ in the shape of Ritalin. I had already read about the effects of Ritalin and other medicines given to children with ADD and ADHD, I knew the outcome wasn’t good all types of side effects including death!
I didn’t want my child on this horrible mind numbing medication but also didn’t want to live with someone who flipped out, had major anger issues, was violent and had no sense of danger. So I did the only thing I could and researched other options, I was surprised how much there was out there to harm our minds and bodies, many of which are in our foods and all have been passed by the food agencies and government as perfectly fine to consume.
I was shocked, outraged and felt overwhelmed by it all. I spent hours, days and weeks on the internet, reading books and researching all the different chemicals, additives, preservatives, E numbers, MSG, dairy, gluten, colours, flavourings, fillers, caffeine and much more.
I quickly realised it was not just my sons diet that had to change but the whole families diets and lifestyle.

Elderberries – fight flu for free!

Sambucus nigra or the black elderberry is a plant native to Europe, Northern Africa and parts of Asia

The elder tree is amazing, it’s a small to medium sized tree that can grow up to 10 metres tall. It is found in hedgerows, down leafy lanes and in dappled wooded areas. It flowers from May onwards and the black/purple berries appear in August.

It is a brilliant plant as you can use the flowers and the berries for culinary and medicinal purposes. Make sure the berries are ripe before using (a dark purple).
